Mission: Defamiliarize

Monday, February 13th, 2012

The assignment was to take a ten photos of a familiar place and make it unfamiliar, what place is more familiar than home? The process was very simple, I just wandered around my house taking pictures at different angles until I had ten and then uploaded it as a set on Flickr.

I loved this assignment. I was able to combine my love of lit and travel. The lines about traveling inspired me to make this. My favorite line by T.S. Elliot was unfortunately not in this poem: “we shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.” Obviously, Eliot is big on travel, like myself, which made this assignment simple.

It was very simple, I just uploaded the image in Flickr and used Picnik to add text.

Comic Book Effect

I tried to add this effect to several pictures, but this was the only one I thought looked ok with the effect. I used a blur tool and a “newsprint” filter since GIMP doesn’t have the halftone effect. Then I played with the hue and saturation to add a different color, that ultimately became the gray-ish color. I don’t remember all of the things I did to this picture, it was just a lot of playing and experimenting with different things, but newsprint was the main effect.

This is a really good tutorial. I attempted to add the font like she had, but was unsuccessful. I haven’t mastered GIMP yet, especially not working with different layers. I don’t have too much experience in using photo editing software like GIMP and PhotoShop, but I’m still working on it. I hope to be able to add it in later.

Color Splash

This was one of the saved photos on my computer. I thought it looked better when I changed it to black and white, but I still liked the color of the shoes, so color splash was the perfect tool. I wear Converse shoes almost on a regular basis, so it was easy to think of something simple to do a visual assignment on.

I used GIMP to create this image. Here is a tutorial:

Step One: Go to “File” and “Open” an image

Step Two: Go to “Image” and “Duplicate

Step Three: Go to “Colors” and “Desaturate” (Luminosity Option)

Step Four: Minimize the duplicate image and go to the original image and select “New Layer” on the Layers toolbar on the right (it looks like a sheet of paper)

Step Five: Select the duplicate B&W image, go to “File” and “Copy”

Step Six: “Paste” the B&W image on top of the original image.

Step Seven: On the right toolbar select the icon that looks like an anchor.

Step Eight: You will see the  “B&W” image and the “Background” on that toolbar- Right click the “B&W” image and select “Add Layer Mask”

Step Nine: Select the icon that looks like a paintbrush and paint the image

Step Ten: Save the File
